The Show - Live Blog

These pictures show the performing arts rehearsing for tonight's show where they will be doing a cabaret which has a theme of light and dark.

This shows one of the performing arts students, Ross, preparing for his role in tonight's show.

Here is a picture which shows mulled wine being made by the catering staff and students who will be serving for our show tonight.

Here is a picture of freshly made bread which was again made by the kitchen staff and students.

Here is a picture of the installation that student, Jack has created. His product is a game in which you play as a student trying to escape college in one minute. He also used an old arcade cabinet to present his game in.

Here is the installation that was created by Shay. In this installation, Shay combined a number of different mediums to fulfill his ideal product; textiles, photography and art.

This is Sam's exhibition space. Sam's installation consists of computer generated models of some characters that he has used in a film. On the computer itself, Sam is also showing a trailor he had made for a film and he has also designed the case for this film too.

www.jackreynolds-show.blogspot.com
He said , 'I have never done anything like this before and am enjoying making a game. I got the acrade cabinet from the promenade in Penzance as they were throwing it out. I had to get rid of the contents of the cabinet and use the creative skills I have learnt to make it look like it is for the game that I am producing. This has been a hard task in itself so it's as if I am really doing two projects in one."

Presentation for capture

Next Monday you will present the findings of your research into practitioners working in a chosen medium. As an example we compared the album artwork created by Jake Walters (Morrisey) and Peter Blake (The Beatles)from different eras using different techniques and technologies that show how time has changed the way that people work in the creative industries.

Research found that Sir Peter Blake had been paid £200 for what became the most famous cover ever. It was mae in 1967 and was the Beatles eighth album. It is a collage of famous people whom the band admired. The band pose as fictitious members of a new group and there are post-modern reference to cultural icons. Blake was a pop-artist using images from popular culture and life sized cardboard cut-outs of heroes along with wax work figures of the Beatles from Madame Tussauds to create a collage which was photographed in a studio. Blake was helped by a photographer, his wife and other people who cut out the cardboard figures so it was not a solo project.

We came up with our own versions of the collage after thinking of our own icons and heroes.

The internet is rife with controversy and speculation about Morrisey who appears to court it or ironically mock the provocative nature of his character in his album art work. JAke Walters is a close collaborator who uses photography to maintain control of the image of Morrisey and to preserve and enhance his enigma. Working in arange of mediums as most modern practitioners seem to he photographs celebrities and also works in the fashion and advertising worlds. His them is striking and memorable portraiture. He employs image manipulation and hios work is highly stylised and symbolic making use of lighting, props, make-up and costume.

IN the album cover we analysed he uses a retro sixties font and the image is a throwback to masculine figures in years past with a proud fatherly pose in a Frd Perry shirt. His lean figure and pose seems rather camp to a modern audience but ther is something reminiscent of conventional Englishness about the image.

Is he saying that after years of refusal he wants to be seen as a fatherly , responsible or human figure rather than a provocateur.

He recently posed for the Guardian when he made another controversial statement about Chinese people being a sub-species because of the way they treat animals. Asked if he was racist he said he does not like anybody. He then refuseed to let the Guardian use the photos they took and got Jake Walters to take some others. Notably one with a cat on his head.

The last image shows how nothing can be taken too seriously in our post modern world.

Researching music video

We are currently exploring the work of musiv video directors using the 'director's series' which includes the work of Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry. There was a timely 'pop promos special' in the Guardian at the weekend which we will use in todays lesson. Check it out and see if it helps your research.

Bob McCreadie of Pirate FM

Pirate FM is a local radio station braodcasting throughout Cornwall and Bob McCreadie is the breakfast show host. He came in today to record a voiceover for the documentary that Jack and Ben are making about regenerating Hayle. The professional nature of the package is remarkable with archive footage edited together with filmed footage to highlight th need for a Pioneerium in Hayle.

BBC BLAST

The BBC Blast team set up there BATVAN at Penwith College today. The team ran a series of workshops with students from Humphry Davy School. Students had to create a radio advert using audio equipmpent and software. Using MACs and editing software. A film crew recorded the event and gathered vox pops and footage that they will edit together next week as part of a work experience brief for the BBC.

Hayle Social Enterprise (Jack, Ben)

Ben and Jack have been working in a very professional manner and have spent hours recording footage and filming on location in Hayle. They are coming in beyond term time to complete the video as their partner would like to show it before screenings in the digital cinema 'screen machine' which is visiting Hayle at the height of summer. The product is a promotional video raising awareness about the trust and their aims to develop a Pioneerium. Interviews have been recorded and edited alongside some archive footage of railways and the once thriving port, which was a cradle of the indutrial revolution. Bob McCready of Pirate FM is coming in to record a voiceover next Friday so the finished product should be of broadcast quality. I for one have been very impressed by the dedication, attention to detail and high expectations of the two students involved.

www.jackreynoldsinteract.blogspot.com

As sometimes happens the production takes over and the recording and reflection in the form of a diary or blog takes a back seat. The assignment briefs lay out what is required in terms of recording the process and these two must ensure that all learning outcomes are addressed. Jack has blog entries throughout the process with some reflection on progress. The dates make it clear that evaluation is happening throughout and decisions and revisions are clearly outlined. Ben will pull it all together over the summer.

Penwith Radio (Sam, Martin, Joe)

Julian Horner at Penwith Radio is very pleased with the influx of young talent for his radio station. Martin and Joe are now co-hosting a regular broadcast aimed at attracting a younger audience to the community radio station which broadcasts online. Martin began by observing a broadcast and being interviewed about local clubs and restaurants so he became a reviewer and whats on expert. The next week he got more involved and drove the desk, changed the music and used the jingles. He then hosted his own show. He now has a regular slot at 6-8pm on a Friday playing hip-hop, R 'n' B and funky house.

www.joeinteeraction.blogspot.com

Evidence and a journal is required by the start of the academic year. Sam is busy editing together a two hour show. The first hour is rock based and the second focuses on house music. He has links in between songs which need some diting so that they are more audible. Sam is getting used to Logic Pro and has recorded the links in a studio. He has given a demo broadcast to his partner to respond to.

Interacting with a radio station is a good choice as it can lead to work experience and develops links with the community. It may also provide a life long hobby or lead to a career. It definitely allows you to develop skills in presentation, interviewing and communication. Ever conscious of an audience it allows you to be self-critical and improve speaking and listening skills.

Tre Project (Daniella , Bi)

Bi and Daniella are working on the Tre Project using archive footage of Penlee lifeboat, helicopter rescues and footage of the terrible gales that can blow up around the someties savage coast of West Penwith. Biyan's father recounts his memories of his time in the ambulance service and in particular the terrible events in 1981 when members of the Penlee lifeboat service lost their lives trying to rescue seamen in force ten gales. A sensitive piece edited usung the interview, archive footage and peaceful music to evoke the mood. Barbara Santi of awen productions provided the footage and the inspiration for the idea and is keen to see the completed project in the new academic year. At the moment Biyan needs to cut the edit down as she is learning that not all the research gathered needs to be used. Selection of material is a key skill and sometimes less is more. Considering the audience and the project that you are creating this piece for is essential.

www.unit3biyanli.blogspot.com

www.unit3daniellagriffiths.blogspot.com

Daniella's blog does evidence some of the primary research visits and iterviews and there is some description of the process. Blogs are regular but there needs to be analysis of progress and more detail to gain the higher mark bands. Bi's blog must be updated to provide a record of the production. It is easier to reflect as you are going along. Bi ensures me that she has edits ready to post but she would like to perfect them.

Portholes Exhibition

Your work is being exhibited at the PZ gallery this week, which is opposite Jubilee Pool in Penzance. There is a DVD of music videos, experimental dance and horror trailers along with some of your graphic designs and photography. It was good to see many of you at the private view last night. Make sure you get down there this week as it is open every day until the weekend. There is some excellent art and design work also ranging from ceramics to textiles and the fine art work and installations of the very talented Harriet Ayling.

Assignment 4 ( Due July 2nd)

You are now working with a partner to fulfil the objectives that you agreed together.

This due to be completed by July 2nd unless you have agreed different deadlines with your partner.

You must fulfil the following ;

• Produce excellent quality materials and products using a full range of technology , materials and techniques
• Successfully realise the intentions set out in your proposal
• Clearly address and appeal to a target audience
• Recognise the requirements and expectations of the outlet it is intended for
• Meet deadlines agreed with your partner
• Be inventive and modify plans when necessary
• Monitor the production process continuously and comprehensively, referring to original plans and explaining how they have been modified
• Collate all pre-production and production paperwork

This section relates to the production and delivery of the project. Obviously, as your projects are different, the nature of your evidence will vary, but you need to submit the following as a minimum

Evidence:
• Evidence of the finished project (film footage, performance, artefact)
• A detailed journal documenting and reflecting upon the process. This should include ideas generated, rehearsal notes, meeting notes, planning documentation, feedback and responses from your partner, diary entries, production issues resolved
• Process Portfolio / Level 3 / Unit 3 – Interaction / candidate’s name

Jubilee Pool (Interaction)

On Saturday, performers put on their 1930's song and dance spectacular at the Jubilee Pool in Penzance as part of their 75th anniversary celebrations. In addition they were asked to utilise a cubicle along with other local artists. There were about 50 different installations on the day and ours included Charlie and her Aunt Sally (not literally). Alex played an experimental dance video that the group had choreographed and filmed. Shanice designed and made a dress in a 1930's style. More pictures and a newspaper article to follow....

Interaction projects

Take some time to explore what each of you is doing, or not doing, by checking out your blogs. Dylan and Shay are working hard on the Tinner's Way project and have been out to Trythall and Nancledra primary school helping local artists Lizzie Black and Alessandra Ausenda with their project. They took photographs to document the events and helped out by entertaining pupils and with their artwork. They are accompanying schoolchildren on walks along the Tinners Way which they have researched and explored in preparation. Dylan's blog is a bit thin but he ensures me that there are a lot of draft entries which are nearly ready to be posted. Dylan is a master blogger and a keen follower of another blogging network for cool cats 'Tumblr'. Some posts are a little too risque for squares like me though.

Daniella and Biyan are waiting for the visit of local film-maker Barbara Santi on Friday to look at archive footage for their short film project. They have some interesting ideas about interviewing local people about their experiences of their home and how it has changed.

www.unit3biyanli.blogspot.com

www.unit3daniellagriffiths.blogspot.com

Jack has found a funky template and has begun to document his interaction with the Hayle Social Enterprise Trust who are promoting the Pioneerium and are really advancing with their plans to raise the profile of the project. The promotional vidoe is being very carefully planned with scripts being proof read by professionals and those working in the industry. CGI techniques may be incorporated using local companies. We are expecting a very professional product fetauring some high profile supporters.

Lauren has blogged about her research and has documented the visits we made to various exhibitions and media outlets in the area such as the Tate in St Ives and Penwith Radio.

More blogs to follow. Ensure that Harvey has got the details so he can follow your interact blog and make sure you update.

Get blogging...

Assignment 3

This assignment is due on July 2nd 2010

Assignment 3/5
Tasks
For this assignment you need to show an understanding of the financial, legal and practical constraints which will inform and influence your project. You will also need to demonstrate the ability to work effectively within these constraints throughout the project. You will need to provide the following:

Evidence:
• Details of the funding arrangements relevant to your partner organisation
(‘Cornwall Council’ funding, registered charity, community project, ‘National Lottery’ funded, ‘Convergence’ funding, ‘Heritage’ funding)
• Full inventory of all the resources that will be available to you for your project
• A detailed budget addressing possible cost implications
• Full discussion of all practical constraints in a SWOT analysis.
• Full discussion of any legal issues which impact upon your project in a web-log pr production journal. This may include legislation relating to working with vulnerable people, working with children
• A full Risk assessment for the project
• Process Portfolio / Level 3 / Unit 3 – Interaction/ candidate’s name

I would suggest starting with interviewing your partner about the above. Ask for full details of their project. Another angle would be to explore the web-site for their organisation. The Tre Project for example has details of governance and about their ethos. www.awen.org.uk/governance.

Barbara Santi is coming in on Friday to conduct a workshop about working with archive footage. This will hopefully inspire your short film idea.

Tinner's Way talks

Local historian and author Craig Weatherhill is talking about the Tinner's Way at Landithney Hall in Madron on Tuesday 8th June at 7pm

Local archaeologist Paul Bonnington is doing likewise the week after June 15th at 7pm

Both are well respected local figures who have a real passion for the area of Penwith evident in their internet profiles. They are experts on the history, archaeology and culture of Penwith and should provide a fascinating insight into the Tinner's Way. Prehaps not something you would have tried before but give it a go and you may be intrigued to find out more.

The future of the Penwith Moors is an issue that you should know about and have an opinion on as it will affect your access rights to an area of outstanding natural beauty on your doorstep.

Screen Machine in Hayle

The Hayle project is generating some excellent publicity which shows students how social action and community groups can raise their profile.

Screen machine is a 'cinema on wheels' which will be around during the holiday season and hopefully will offer some work experience opportunities. This visit will highlight the need for a cinema outlet in Hayle. Digital exhibition is the future of cinema as the 3D experience offers something the home cinema cannot provide. This ties in with the ethos of the Pioneerium providing vital community facilities to enrich the cultural experiences of the local people.

The Screen Machine has also been on Radio 4 and would make a great case study for A level Film Studies. It is currently in Scotland bringing the cinema experience to rural communities. www.screenmachine.co.uk
