Tate St. Ives

We visited the Tate Gallery in beautiful St. Ives on a wonderful summer day. The views from the gallery are stunning and cleverly used in reflections. The building itself is designed with the landscape in mind and closer inspection reveals how the architecture is reflective of the purpose of the building. All this and more was explained by Rebecca who co-ordinates education activities which are a part of the Tate's remit and a reason it receives a government grant.

We were given a tour around the gallery where there is a new exhibition. The main artist featured is Lily Van der Stokker who has drawn directly onto the walls of the gallery. These have a 'child like innocence and naivety' and challenge the idea of the art as exclusive and 'grand'. Art for everyone perhaps which must divide audiences about its merits. Our group were on the whole very positive about the work and liked the colour and vibrancy. We were able to engage with the art immediately and it provoked discussion. Gem felt that art should be something that could not be done by herself just as well and initially thought that the work had been done by schoolcchildren from St Ives. Using IKEA sofas and painting on the walls may not be some peoples idea of art worthy of display at the Tate but then many other modern art exhibits could be seen in this light. You can provide your own interpretation or thoughts on modern art. Shay provided a passionate and articulate defence of art as open to interpreation by the audience and that it should not be limited to supposed 'high art' but should be able to be enjoyed by children and a wide range of audiences. It is interesting that the Tate have put this on over the Summer as it will appeal to younger auidences and even inspire the idea that art can be accessed and enjoyed by all. With a range of activities such as art workshops on the beach this is a smart choice to get visitors and sometimes reluctant younger audiences to enjoy this jewel in the West Penwith creative arts industry.

You now need to write about the Tate and aanything you found out from the talk and the visit for your primary reserach. Try and provide a personal response to the art that you encountered.

Penwith Radio

On Tuesday you visited Penwith Radio which is a community radio station broadcasting from the Wharfside in Penzance. You interviewed Julian Horner and took photos which are above. They are very keen to get involved with your age group to widen the audience to appeal to the whole community. An interact project may be to create your own offline radio show using Logic Pro and then offer that as a demo. If your relationship with them develops you may find yourself on air or as part of the team who run the station. This would make a wonderful work experience opportunity also.

Proposal for the Tre Project

Barbara Santi of Awen Productions has sent you the following advice. Use it to formulate your ideas for your project. Detailed proposals are due in before Whitsun with your research and Barbara needs them as soon as possible so that archive footage can be found.

Your proposal should include a three line 'logline'( what the film is about ) followed by a main proposal. This should include ;

Why do you want to make the film ?

What is the style, the mood, the feel ?

Why use the techniques that you have chosen ?

What archive material do you want to use and why ?

What you want to achieve through the film ?

What new footage you want to shoot and why ?

Identify your team and the roles they will play

Identify a time-frame

Can it be achieved with the budget and resources that you have ?

How to write a documentary treatment or proposal.....

Scripts are often not used in documentary films—because you cannot predict what will happen when the camera is rolling. In place of a script, filmmakers use treatments, proposals, or even outlines--to describe and help plan a documentary project. There is a lot of overlap between these concepts and different filmmakers use them in similar and often interchangeable ways.

A treatment is a short story narrative written in simple, non-technical language (ie. no camera angles, transitions, etc.).

A proposal, which frequently includes a treatment, is a thorough description of all aspects of a project. It is created in the pre-production stage of a documentary project to persuade funders, distributors and others to support the project.

Proposals
An effective proposal will:
• Tell a good story
• Make human truths emerge through images—not just verbal description.
• Present a personal, critical perspective on some aspect of the human condition.
• Inform and emotionally move an audience

Usually a proposal will contain the following information:
• Length of work, format.
• Who is the intended audience?
• Goal or intended purpose(s) of the film
• Has any media work already been produced on this subject? If so, what is new,
different, interesting, engaging about your approach?

• Style (Any key stylistic elements in writing, shooting, audio, editing, etc.)
• What about the soundtrack? (Any music, narration, etc.—If so, who? what?)
• Who is working on the project? And what similar projects have they done in the
past?

Depending on the situation, you may choose to include the following:
How will the project be funded? An outline production schedule.

Anything Goes at The Wintz

Students following the Performing Arts pathway of the Creative and Media Diploma at Penwith College put on a show for local people celebrating the songs of the 1930’s entitled , ‘Anything Goes at the Wintz’.

The students interpreted the stories of five young women getting ready for a magical night of dancing at the Winter Gardens which intertwine love, happiness, heartbreak, tragedy and friendship. The audience enjoyed a cream tea prepared by students on catering courses and were able to experience the first performance in the new theatre.

Tinners Way

The Tinners Way

Primary Research

You are researching cultural diversity in your local area. Find out what venues are available and what artists are performing or exhibiting in the area. Your visit to the Acorn Arts Centre and interview with the events organiser should have provided an insight into a major venue for live acts in West Penwith.

Each Tuesday you will be taken to meet a possible partner and to research 'what's on' in your local area. Make sure that you take photographs and record the answers to your investigative questions. We have set up visits to the Penlee Gallery and PZ gallery in Penzance. You have met with the organisers of the Golowan festival which celebrates pagan traditions of midsummer in Penwith. You will also visit St Ives and work with the Tate gallery. You then need to present your research findings in the form of a magazine article in your graphic design sessions. You also need to record your research and evaluate your findings and visits in your blog.

Interaction Assignnment 2 (LO2) Development of an effective working relationship

You have conducted a range of extensive research and now you need to decide which ideas are the most appealing and which partner you are most excited about working with

You need to develop your relationship with a chosen partner, showing a real sensitivity to their values and needs

Write a detailed description of your chosen partner and their organisation outlining their values and needs

Communicate your ideas clearly and decide on clear objectives for your partnership

Create a detailed proposal for your project.

Reflect on the progress of the project in a production diary or web-log

Evidence

• Assessment of partner’s organisation and needs

• Process Portfolio in the form of a production diary or web-log

• Minutes from all meetings and details of conversations with your partner

• Record of the development of your relationship in a web-log

• Detailed proposal including clear objectives

• Schedule / time management plan

This development of a working relationship with a partner will be ongoing but you will have an interim assessment of your progress at half-term so that guidance and advice can be offered.

For the final submission your work will hopefully fit mark band 3 and here are the descriptors.

You must be able to identify opportunities for interaction work

Keep a ‘process portfolio’ in the form of a production diary or web-log
‘Process portfolio / level 3 / Unit 3 / - Interaction / candidate’s name

Explore cultural diversity in your area

As a group present a ‘Creative and Media Guide to West Penwith’ that shows the cultural diversity of West Penwith

Artists
Photographers
Musicians

Visit galleries and meet practitioners and keep a record in your online blog as evidence of research about possible partners

Charities
Healthcare agencies
Youth work bodies
Social action groups
Event organisers
Production companies

Generate, research and explore initial ideas you could realise if you worked with each partner

Meet potential partners and research potential projects

Record these meetings

Document this research in your web-blog

As a minimum you need to produce the following ;

A research plan or carefully collated research log

Research material and planning notes
